Golf Lessons On The Web For Beginners

The questions is, 'Should people who are new to golf obtain their golf tips from the internet?' I am of the view that the best starting point for people who are just starting to learn how to play golf is to learn to hit the golf ball on a practice green by pitching, chipping and putting BEFORE they have a lesson with a pro and BEFORE they go to the driving range.

This will give them confidence in striking the ball and test their interest in golf before making a financial commitment to learning how to play golf. In order to be able to hit the ball properly it is crucial that the new golfer first learns how to grip the club and has a basic understanding of pitching, chipping and putting techniques.

Arguably the pro can advise on these techniques, but I am not sure that is where the pro will start a lesson. In any sport " soccer, tennis, baseball " it is important that the basic principles are learned first before the game can be developed. To play any sport you have to know how to kick, throw, catch and/or hit a ball.

Why pay a professional coach to learn how to do this? Pay for lessons ONCE you have learned how to hit the ball. You'll get much better value for money this way.

So what about free golf tips on the internet? The problem is that there is so much information available it is difficult for the golf beginner to know where to look and what information is good and what is poor.

'Keep it simple' is my response. Check that the advice you are getting is from a registered PGA professional. The pro will usually state this, but if you are in doubt, check them out. Google their name and check their credentials and in the spirit of keeping it simple, only use online lessons at the beginning to learn some of the basics " how to grip the golf club, the basics of chipping, pitching and putting.

Leave the more complex online golf instruction " using the driver and fairway woods and long irons - until you have an understanding of what is important in terms of technique " probably after you have had a few pro lessons. Use online instruction for the more complex shots to DEVELOP your game, NOT to learn the basics. It's far too important to get wrong.

As with anything in life, it is important to exercise judgement and online golf lessons are no exception. If you want to learn how to grip the club, pitch, chip and putt, type in a search for, ''how to grip the golf club', pitching/chipping and putting instruction videos' and check out whether you think the advice is sound or not.

I would recommend Michael Lamanna for advice on the grip and Ben Hogan " 5 Lessons, The Modern Fundamentals of Golf. For pitching, chipping and putting visit my blog for some free training videos or try searching on the internet (BUT exercise judgement).

Go carefully " there are a lot of sharks out there!
